Welcome back. This week brought two big moves on the ground floor of agriculture: a private-equity seed house picking up a 74-year-old Kansas grass-seed cleaner, and a grain company spending close to a billion dollars to grind more corn. There's also a fresh food-and-ag credit fund, new tools for corn rootworm and spray drones, and a greenhouse in Switzerland pulling its CO₂ straight out of the air.
This Week's Paid Edition: Price Support
Our latest Trends Analysis compares US agriculture activity in the iGrow Intelligence database from 1 January to 23 October 2026 against the same window in 2025. Public program commitments rose to $12.2B from $3.0B, led by an $8.0B USDA relief program. Private rounds held flat at 41 against 39, and stripping out the $400M Tessenderlo investment in FMC shrinks the apparent funding surge to about 15%. Bankruptcies halved to four, and buyers shifted toward asset and brand carve-outs. The edition closes with four signposts to watch into mid-2027.
I. Weekly Pulse: The Impact Scorecard
NativeSeed Group buys Sharp Brothers Seed assets: The Heartwood Partners-backed seed house added a 74-year-old Kansas specialist in cleaning warm-season native grasses. It now runs nine regional seed houses serving growers and restoration buyers across the Great Plains.
The Andersons buys Harvestone for $915M: Three corn ethanol plants lift The Andersons' capacity to about 730 million gallons a year. About half the price rests on expected federal tax-credit cash flows.
Proterra closes Credit Fund 3 at $680M: The food and agriculture investor beat its $500M target by more than a third. The fund lends directly to mid-sized food processors and branded companies.
Adaviv wins Verdex Capital backing: The MIT spinout's AI crop-monitoring platform is expanding into Uruguay and Peru. The move follows customers such as Driscoll's and two eucalyptus producers.
ProFarm lines up Neovo for 2027 corn: A new liquid insecticide-nematicide with a new mode of action targets corn rootworm and nematodes. Corn Belt trials are under way.
II. Tier 1: Corporate & Financial Shifts
NativeSeed Group acquires Sharp Brothers Seed Company assets [Healy, Kansas]. NativeSeed, a Heartwood Partners portfolio company based in [Denver, Colorado], bought the cleaning, de-awning and conditioning equipment of the 74-year-old specialist, along with its operators. Terms were not disclosed. Structural Impact: Native-grass seed processing is a narrow, equipment-heavy niche. Folding it into a nine-house regional network gives conservation agencies and restoration buyers fewer, larger suppliers for species such as big bluestem, switchgrass and buffalo grass.
The Andersons to acquire Harvestone Low Carbon Partners for $915M. The [Maumee, Ohio] agribusiness is buying three corn ethanol plants from Energy Capital Partners, two in [North Dakota, USA] and one in [Indiana, USA]. It is paying cash funded by about $300M from its revolver and $615M of new long-term debt, with committed financing from U.S. Bank and Farm Credit Mid-America. The company attributes roughly half the enterprise value to expected 45Z and 45Q tax-credit cash flows. Structural Impact: Capacity rises by about 215 million gallons to roughly 730 million. That makes The Andersons a bigger corn buyer in the northern Plains and ties more of its earnings to federal credit policy. Closing is expected in Q4 2026 or early Q1 2027.
Proterra Investment Partners closes Credit Fund 3 at $680M. The [Minneapolis, Minnesota] firm passed its $500M target, and commitments including companion vehicles exceed $1B. Structural Impact: More direct-lending capital is now available to food processors and vertically integrated companies outside the bank market.
Adaviv receives strategic investment from Verdex Capital. The [Somerville, Massachusetts] startup took an undisclosed sum from the Calgary agri-food investor to open operations in [Uruguay] and [Peru].
III. Tier 2: Innovation & Public Strategy
1. Go-to-Market & Product Launches
ProFarm unveiled Neovo, a liquid insecticide-nematicide that targets corn rootworm and nematodes with a new mode of action, for the 2027 season. CJ BIO (CJ CheilJedang, [Seoul, South Korea]) is debuting NewtriSolution at EuroTier 2026. The web platform links least-cost and carbon simulators, pig amino-acid requirements and ROI modelling for feed formulators. Seso [San Francisco, California] relaunched its H-2A workforce platform around Rootly, an AI assistant that changes records only after user approval, plus an I-9 audit agent. Exedy Drones opened $1,000 reservations for the AYRE CX, which spreads liquid and granular product from one airframe, with deliveries targeted for spring 2027. fortyfour [St. Gallen, Switzerland] is feeding air-captured CO₂ into Meier Gemüse's greenhouse, replacing trucked-in gas. Farmblox [Santa Cruz, California] says its remote monitoring now covers close to 1 million acres, and its COP-R-LOCK pump-wiring theft alarm recorded no thefts at protected sites in its first year.
2. Institutional & Regulatory Plays
Fair Trade USA [Oakland, California] won a $600,000 grant from the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation to build an AI planning tool for smallholders. It combines certification records, audit findings, Community Development Fund data and open climate data. The project runs from September 2026 to September 2027 for coffee, cocoa and bananas in [Peru], [Côte d'Ivoire] and [Colombia], and aims to reach at least 10 cooperatives and 3,000 farmers. Philanthropic money is paying for the data layer that cooperatives rarely fund themselves, which lowers the cost for buyers and lenders who later need verified production and climate-risk information.
IV. Tier 3: Market Signals & Operations
Research, Studies & Lawsuits: Cora Eichholz and Heidrun Steinmetz of RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau reviewed 110 studies on recovering potassium fertilizer from wastewater as an alternative to mined potash. Only 11 were pilot-scale, and the authors call for longer trials on real waste streams. Separately, feed-machinery maker Jiangsu Muyang Group [Yangzhou, China] said the Jiangsu High People's Court accepted its case against former executives and affiliated entities including FAMSUN, alleging business was diverted to other platforms. These are the company's own allegations.
