Welcome back. This week a private equity firm bought into the business of baling and hauling crop residue, two agtech software platforms changed hands or raised money, and Bayer signed two biologicals deals in two markets. Grab a coffee. Here's what moved in agriculture between Saturday and Friday.
This Week's Paid Edition: Grain Elevator
Our latest Trends Analysis tracks cereals and grains through 2 October 2026 against the same window in 2025. Records rose from 53 to 127 and the country base widened from 14 to 27. Nine priced venture rounds averaged $9.2M, against three averaging $51.2M a year earlier, and seven of ten equity rounds were seed or Series A. Partnerships became the largest category at 31 records, product launches went from 5 to 23, and the distress cluster around one sorghum seed company in 2025 has no equivalent this year. The edition ends with four dated signals to watch, from Vylor's hybrid wheat schedule to a second buyer for rice methane credits.
I. Weekly Pulse: The Impact Scorecard
Ara Partners takes majority control of Pacific Ag: Ara Partners acquired a majority interest in Pacific Ag, which it calls North America's largest crop residue supply and logistics company. Corn stover and wheat straw now sit inside a decarbonization fund's waste-to-value thesis.
CarbonFarm closes $7.8M Series A for rice decarbonization: Colam Impact led the oversubscribed round, with Proparco and Bpifrance among new backers. The money goes to measurement tools and a push into Latin America.
Terminus Capital takes majority stake in PickTrace: Terminus Capital Partners made a majority growth investment in the farm labor and compliance platform for specialty growers. It is the second control deal of the week in ag operations.
Switch Bioworks signs Bayer collaboration on biological nitrogen: Bayer Crop Science will bring formulation, field testing and commercialization to the Stanford spinout's engineered microbes. The strains are already in USDA- and EPA-authorized U.S. field trials.
Greeneye Technology plants its North American flag in Kansas: After spraying more than 500,000 acres in 2026 with average non-residual herbicide savings of 81%, the targeted-spraying company is opening its regional headquarters in [Salina, Kansas].
II. Tier 1: Corporate & Financial Shifts
Ara Partners / Pacific Ag. Boston-based Ara Partners bought a majority interest in Pacific Ag, founded in 1998 in the Columbia River Basin, for an undisclosed price. Pacific Ag harvests, stores and delivers corn stover and wheat straw to dairies, animal protein producers and mushroom growers, working with farmers in more than 30 states. [Structural Impact]: Crop residue has been a farm by-product with a thin, local market. A decarbonization-focused buyer putting control capital behind the logistics layer treats residue as a feedstock with its own supply chain, which should raise the price of baling contracts and pull more acres into residue removal.
CarbonFarm Series A. CarbonFarm closed an oversubscribed $7.8M Series A led by Colam Impact, with Proparco, Suma Capital, elea, Working Capital Fund, Albo and Bpifrance joining returning backers Serena and Techmind. The company already works in 19 countries. [Structural Impact]: Development finance (Proparco, Bpifrance) alongside impact funds signals that rice methane measurement is being priced as infrastructure for corporate food supply chains, not only as a carbon credit trade.
Terminus Capital / PickTrace. Terminus Capital Partners made a majority growth investment of undisclosed size in PickTrace, whose platform covers onboarding, payroll, labor compliance, field operations and quality control for specialty growers. [Structural Impact]: Labor compliance is the most regulated cost line in specialty crops, and a B2B software buyout puts PickTrace on a roll-up path toward an operating system for those farms.
TTA-ISO / Demtec. TTA-ISO, formed by the merger of ISO Horti and TTA, bought the Demtec brand, IP and inventory out of bankruptcy without taking on its liabilities, and plans to restart production. [Structural Impact]: Horticulture automation keeps consolidating, here through a distressed-asset purchase.
III. Tier 2: Innovation & Public Strategy
1. Go-to-Market & Product Launches
Biologicals and new entrants pressed into crop protection. Koppert launched Macan in [Brazil], a Bacillus velezensis foliar fungicide for soybean, corn and sugarcane registered for 13 disease targets, and Lubrizol entered crop care with its ZYRA formulation range. On the data side, Proba released NTree in [Amsterdam, Netherlands], an AI agent that calculates fertilizer emissions from product-, origin- and field-specific values for Scope 3 and SBTi FLAG reporting, and CFi Solutions launched gridl, business software for ag retailers and grain elevators with financing built in. Interko is installing its fifth-generation ripening-room cooler in [Ireland], and Signify reported Finnish cucumber growers saving about €5,000 per hectare in energy by cutting far-red light, with no yield loss.
2. Institutional & Regulatory Plays
Bayer was on both sides of the biologicals map: a collaboration with Switch Bioworks on root-level nitrogen fixation, and a distribution deal putting INERA's microbial crop nutrition into its India network under the government's PM-PRANAM scheme. Syngenta partnered with Kyoyu Agri on the new rice herbicide active Cyclopyranil for Asia, and EcoPhage signed Agricultura Nacional to sell its EPA-approved phage products across [Mexico]. Expansions followed: CLAAS opened a 44,800-square-foot R&D center in [Omaha, Nebraska] within a $100M North American plan, Greeneye Technology set up in [Salina, Kansas], BASF Nunhems completed an automated lettuce-breeding greenhouse in ['s-Gravenzande, Netherlands], and Voltiris opened a hectare-scale solar greenhouse over strawberries in [Someren, Netherlands]. University and foundation partners carry the early risk: Lincoln University and McCain Foods brought CropX into an eight-year regenerative potato trial in New Zealand, and the John Deere Foundation committed $18.5M to link farmers with food banks.
IV. Tier 3: Market Signals & Operations
Research, Studies & Lawsuits: A 98-day soil incubation study by Midwestern BioAg and the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) found TerraNu K+ supplied about 15% more available potassium than muriate of potash in alkaline soils; results are company-reported with no yield data. The FDA approved Kemin Industries' KemTRACE Chromium for laying and breeder hens, Groundwork BioAg's Rootella Carbon programme earned a 'BBB' from BeZero Carbon, and Ocho Sur certified 2,234 hectares of organic palm oil in [Ucayali, Peru].
