👋 Happy Friday. This week the checkbook came out across all three of our beats: food and water companies kept consolidating, a California energy agency printed a $1.4 billion green bond, and nuclear campuses got a lot bigger. Grab a coffee — here's your two-to-five-minute read on the week that moved energy, water and agriculture.

☕ First, this week's paid edition: Narrow Rows

Our latest Trends Analysis puts September 2026 next to September 2025 across land-based agriculture. Records rose from 199 to 227, but recorded agriculture funding halved, from $2,802.2M across 30 actions to $1,403.8M across 12, with two entries carrying 97% of the month's capital. Ownership changes held at 11, led by Hormel Foods' $1,055.0M purchase of Brakebush, while North America's share of activity climbed to 65.2% and Europe's halved. It closes with four dated signals to watch.

🏆 The Scorecard

  • Betagro bought a majority stake in Thai foodservice platform Freshket, its first move into FoodTech.

  • Mérieux NutriSciences closed its purchase of Certified Group, becoming North America's leading food-testing provider.

  • Lindsay agreed to buy Brazilian hose-reel irrigation maker Setorial Irrigação, widening its global irrigation portfolio.

  • Metron acquired submetering and leak-detection maker H2O Degree, deepening its water-intelligence stack.

  • Clean Power Alliance closed a $1.4 billion green prepay bond, its seventh, locking in about $91.1 million in renewable-energy savings.

The big deals

Betagro, the Thai integrated food group, took a majority stake in Freshket, an online platform that supplies ingredients to more than 20,000 foodservice operators, through its venture unit Betagro Ventures. Terms weren't disclosed; Betagro calls it its entry into FoodTech and a way to bolt digital distribution onto its production and logistics business.

Mérieux NutriSciences completed its acquisition of Certified Group, becoming North America's leading food-testing provider. Certified brings roughly $300 million in revenue, 31 labs and 1,600-plus staff, and the financing drew in new minority holders Peugeot Invest and Continental Grain.

Lindsay agreed to acquire Setorial Irrigação, a leading Brazilian maker of hose-reel irrigation systems, broadening its global irrigation portfolio and its footprint in Brazil's growing market. On the water side, Metron — an XPV Water Partners company — bought H2O Degree, pairing its smart water meters and WaterScope analytics with H2O Degree's LoRaWAN submetering and in-unit leak detection for multifamily and affordable housing. And in frozen foods, Swander Pace Capital sold Fine Choice Foods, the maker of SUMM!-brand Asian-inspired appetizers, to Power Sustainable Lios after eight years of ownership.

Why it matters: Two of the week's biggest tickets were in food and water, not flashy frontier tech — a reminder that consolidation money is flowing toward the unglamorous plumbing of the food and water systems (testing labs, submeters, cold-chain distribution) as much as toward the headline innovation.

Follow the money

Clean Power Alliance, the community-choice agency for Los Angeles and Ventura counties, closed a $1.4 billion green energy prepayment bond with J.P. Morgan as prepaid supplier, expecting roughly $91.1 million in savings over seven years. The biggest private raise went to Peak Energy, which pulled in an oversubscribed $108 million Series B led by General Motors Ventures to scale passively cooled sodium-ion storage, while Pivot Energy secured a $500 million three-year credit facility from Nuveen for distributed solar and batteries.

Debt and project finance kept coming: Commonwealth Fusion Systems signed an $85 million CHIPS Act letter of intent with the U.S. Department of Commerce for fusion-relevant semiconductor R&D, and Sweden's Ellevio took a ~$100 million (SEK 1 billion) loan from the Nordic Investment Bank to rebuild a Stockholm substation. Tidal developer Minesto had a two-headline week — a ~$13 million rights issue for its Faroe and Ireland projects, plus selection for a €20.2 million EU Innovation Fund grant for its Euro Dragon Farm.

Among the smaller raises, biologicals maker IMIO raised $12 million led by Sofinnova Partners with Chipotle's Cultivate Next; onsite-solar marketplace VECKTA closed an $11 million Series A led by Origin Ventures; and ion-exchange-resin maker ResinTech landed $15 million in New Markets Tax Credit financing for a Camden expansion. Rounding out the ledger: CRSilva Ventures opened with a $5 million anchor from the U.S. Endowment for Forestry, Ground Up Investing hit a $6 million first close for farmer-income lending, Napa Green drew a $3 million carbon-farming grant, and Pennsylvania American Water won $42.65 million in PENNVEST funding for sewer and lead-line work.

Around the sectors

⚡ On the grid

Nuclear owned the week. The Nuclear Company unveiled Prosperity One, a proposed six-reactor, 6.6 GW AP1000 campus on the Ohio River in [Lewis County, Kentucky] that would be the largest U.S. nuclear site. Small modular reactors kept their momentum too: AEP teamed with Amazon and X-energy to study a 960 MW SMR project in [Sullivan County, Indiana], Dairyland Power signed a letter of intent with Applied Atomics for SMRs at a retired plant site in [Genoa, Wisconsin], and Deployable Energy tapped Sargent & Lundy to license its Unity-1 microreactor. In storage and solar, HiTHIUM entered Canada with an 8-hour BESS and a cold-weather sodium-ion system, Rondo Energy and Rio Tinto began engineering Australia's largest heat battery at a [Gladstone, Queensland] refinery, Ignitis added battery storage to its Lithuanian virtual power plant, and TCL SunPower Global launched its back-contact Origin panel in Europe with a 40-year warranty. Facilities filled in the rest: PV Hardware expanded solar-tracker production in [Houston, Texas], Generate Capital and TurningPoint Energy energized a 3.5 MW community solar project in [Sandwich, Illinois], and two waste-to-energy plants came online: PurposeEnergy's $40M food-residuals digester in [Minster, Ohio] and The Landfill Group's landfill-gas RNG facility in [Columbus, Georgia].

💧 In the water

ZwitterCo took a strategic investment from Ecolab to pair its fouling-resistant membranes with Ecolab's treatment programs for food-and-beverage water reuse. The data-center water crunch drew fresh entrants: Aquaria Technologies opened a 2027 pilot for Hydrogrid, a containerized on-site supply that pulls up to 5,300 gallons a day per unit from the air. QUA launched its compact EnviQ RF 30 membrane module for decentralized wastewater, and in [San Bernardino County, California] public agencies formed a new joint-powers authority to finance water and energy infrastructure.

🌱 In the field

Robotics led the field: Kubota advanced its Agtonomy partnership onto an autonomous M5L tractor for orchards and nut groves, and Niqo Robotics unveiled the RoboWeeder F50, a 46-foot AI weeder it calls the widest of its kind in North America. Software and data pressed in — Tellia shipped a $20-a-month voice-AI app for agronomists, and SatYield partnered with Zema Global to pipe satellite crop forecasts to commodity traders. Lab-grown cocoa went commercial as GALY opened U.S. operations and advanced a UAE rollout, while Hershey committed $2.5 million to deforestation-free cocoa in Nigeria. Policy and partnerships filled the field: the USDA rolled out an $8 billion Harvest Fuel Relief program and added crop-insurance and trade measures to its cotton plan; Big River Resources hired Empact to manage 45Z clean-fuel tax-credit compliance; ADM and Concern Worldwide expanded a Kenya smallholder program; the Islamic Development Bank and IFAD aimed to mobilize $750 million for food systems; and Cairnspring Mills opened a new stone mill on tribal land in [Pendleton, Oregon].
